Moving changes everything. The familiar becomes foreign, routines disappear, and even simple tasks like finding a grocery store feel overwhelming. We know this because we've lived it—not once, but through eight major relocations across three countries and multiple states.
Melissa & Sumit
Our relocation journey began fresh out of college in Cincinnati, moving to Phoenix for our first corporate job. What started as excitement quickly became a learning experience in navigating corporate relocation policies, temporary housing, and building a life in an unfamiliar place.
Then life happened. A family emergency pulled us to India in 2008—our first taste of international moving without corporate support. We learned firsthand what it means to coordinate an overseas move while dealing with personal crisis.
Returning to the US in 2009 brought new challenges: helping family members with special needs adapt to a completely different country and culture. We discovered that relocation isn't just about moving belongings—it's about moving lives.
The Real Tests
When Sumit accepted a C-Suite position in Boston in 2013, we thought we had moving figured out. We were wrong. Relocating with a 2-year-old, a 6-month-old baby, and a family member requiring special care taught us that no two moves are alike. Each challenge we faced—from finding appropriate schools to accessing healthcare—became part of our growing understanding of what families really need during transitions.
Our 2016 move from Boston to Corona, California, finally felt seamless. Three weeks after arriving, Corona felt like home. We had learned to plan for the unexpected, research thoroughly, and prepare for the emotional aspects of moving, not just the logistical ones.
International Complexity
Moving to Konstanz, Germany, opened our eyes to cultural adaptation in ways we never expected. Multi-part shipments, language barriers, different banking systems, school enrollment processes—we navigated it all while trying to help our children adjust to their third country.
If Germany taught us about international complexity, returning to Phoenix during the COVID pandemic in 2020 showed us crisis relocation. With 48 hours' notice and a world in lockdown, we managed a three-phase move over six months. We learned that flexibility and emotional support matter as much as logistics.
Every family's relocation story is unique, but the feelings are universal: the excitement mixed with anxiety, the hope coupled with uncertainty, the determination shadowed by exhaustion. We've felt all of it.
Through corporate moves and personal ones, with babies and teenagers, during calm times and global crises, we've learned that successful relocation goes beyond moving boxes. It's about understanding the human side of transition—the need for local knowledge, cultural insight, and someone who truly gets what you're going through.
Our Phoenix Expertise
Since 2001, we've called Phoenix home between our various adventures. Melissa's work as a Realtor and our residential investing since 2008 means we know this city's neighborhoods, schools, markets, and communities intimately. But more importantly, we understand what it takes to feel at home here.
Whether you're moving across town or across the world, with a growing family or aging parents, for a dream job or unexpected circumstances—we understand. We've been overwhelmed by the complexity, frustrated by the unexpected, and ultimately grateful for each experience that taught us something new about making difficult transitions easier.
Relocation is challenging. You don't have to figure it out alone.another unique experience. We didn't come back alone - we returned with family members with special needs, adding another layer of complexity to our journey.
